Nigeria's Falconets held a strong China side to a goalless draw in their second group match at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. Benfica forward Akekoromowei has joined the squad in Poland.
The record that should be better known
Nigeria has qualified for the U-20 Women's World Cup more often than almost any country outside the traditional powers, and the Falconets have reached the knockout rounds repeatedly. This is not a team overachieving on a good day. It is a programme with a long record of getting to tournaments and competing at them.
What a draw with China is worth
More than the scoreline suggests. China's youth setup is funded and centralised in a way Nigeria's is not, and a point taken from them in a group match is a genuine result rather than a moral victory.
The Falconets keep doing the difficult part. The country keeps missing the broadcast.
Where these players go next
| Path | How common |
|---|---|
| European club after a strong tournament | Increasingly common |
| Straight into the Super Falcons | Happens, for a few |
| Back to a domestic league with little funding | Still the majority |
A World Cup is the shop window. Most of the squad is not bought.
A Benfica forward joining the squad mid-tournament is a sign of the first route working. It is also a reminder that the route depends on somebody in Europe watching, which brings the argument back to broadcast.
The cheap fix
Carry the matches. Nigerian women's football has a documented record of winning things and a documented shortage of people who saw it happen. That is a distribution problem, and distribution is the one part of this that does not require developing a single player.

If you argue about Nigerian football for a living, you may as well dress like it. Caps and tees are in the TalkTalkNigeria store, and Naira pricing is here.
