Chelle Is Looking At Players Who Are Not Usually In The Squad

Eric Chelle has indicated that four players outside the regular Super Eagles group could be invited for the September window. That is a small announcement with an unusual amount of room behind it.
Why now is the moment to do it
Nigeria did not qualify for the 2026 World Cup. That is a serious failure and it has one narrow benefit: for the first time in years, a Nigeria coach has a window with nothing riding on the result.
Squad experimentation almost never happens in Nigerian football because there is always a qualifier next month and a public that treats every draw as a crisis. A coach who brings in four uncapped players and loses is finished. A coach who does it in a friendly window with no tournament in sight can survive the same result.
The only useful thing about missing a World Cup is the eighteen months of freedom that follow.
Where the new names are coming from
The obvious pool is players having good club seasons who have never quite fitted the established group. Semi Ajayi scored for newly promoted Hull City against Manchester United on Saturday. Chidera Ejuke has just ended a drought at Sevilla. Arthur Okonkwo is starting a season at Charlton after switching allegiance to Nigeria in April.
None of those is a guess about the four. The point is that the supply exists and it is visible every weekend, which has not always been the case.
The thing to watch
Not who gets called. Whether they get minutes. Nigerian squads have a long tradition of inviting new players, seating them for ninety minutes, and never calling them again, which produces a cap list rather than a squad.
The next competitive target is AFCON. The team that goes there is being chosen in windows like this one.
