Ejuke Finally Scored For Sevilla
Seville · Sunday 23 August 2026
Chidera Ejuke has ended his goal drought for Sevilla, scoring in the win over Athletic and saying afterwards that he intends to keep helping the team.
The quote is boilerplate. The goal is not, because of what a drought does to a wide player's season.
The mechanics of a winger's drought
A winger who is not scoring is judged on a set of things nobody counts: whether he beat his man, whether the cross found somebody, whether he tracked back. Those are real contributions and they are invisible in a match report.
What is visible is the goal column. A manager under pressure looking at a winger with zero goals will eventually make a change, regardless of what the winger is actually doing. Ending a drought does not make a player better. It buys him several more weeks of being picked, which is the resource that actually determines a season.
Ejuke and Nigeria
Nigeria has an unusual surplus of wide attacking players and a persistent problem converting that surplus into a settled national team. Ademola Lookman is being played as a centre-forward at Atletico Madrid because Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth are unavailable. Samuel Chukwueze is being retrained as a wing-back at Milan.
Both of those are clubs solving their own problems, not Nigeria's. Ejuke playing regularly in his actual position, in a competitive league, is quietly more useful to a national coach than either.
The Super Eagles do not need more wide players. They need three who are starting every week somewhere serious.
What comes next
Nigeria's next senior window is in September, and coach Eric Chelle has already indicated he is looking at players outside the usual group. A Sevilla winger who has just scored and is in the team is exactly the profile that gets a call in that situation.
The Super Eagles are not going to the World Cup. The squad being assembled now is for AFCON, and it is being shaped by weekends like this one.
