The Super Falcons Money Is Finally Being Processed
Abuja · Monday 7 September 2026
The National Sports Commission and the Federal Ministry of Finance say they are concluding payment of the presidential cash rewards approved for the Super Falcons and D'Tigress. NSC chairman Shehu Dikko met the Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, to move it along.
The awards were announced after the Falcons won WAFCON in Morocco and D'Tigress retained the Women's AfroBasket title in Cote d'Ivoire.
What was promised
| Recipient | Cash | Housing |
|---|---|---|
| Each of 24 players | Naira equivalent of $100,000 | Three-bedroom apartment |
| Each technical team member | Naira equivalent of $50,000 | Three-bedroom apartment |
Apartments allocated under the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme.
The finance ministry says the flats in Abuja have been paid for and presented. The cash is with the ministry and the Accountant-General of the Federation, going directly to the athletes' accounts.
Why "finally" is the right word
Nigerian sport has a long and well-documented history of announced rewards that arrive late, arrive partially, or do not arrive. Bonus disputes have produced sit-ins at hotels, refusals to train, and delegations of players negotiating in public during tournaments. The Super Falcons in particular have had that argument more than any other national team, across multiple administrations.
An announcement is a press release. A payment is a bank alert. Nigerian athletes have learned to treat those as unrelated events.
The naira equivalent detail
The award was set in dollars and is being paid in naira. The gap between the announcement and the payment is therefore also an exchange-rate question, and whichever rate is applied decides how much of the promised sum the players actually receive.
What would make this permanent
A standing schedule of what a team earns for winning a continental title, published in advance and paid within a fixed number of days. Presidential rewards are discretionary gestures by design, which is why every single one turns into a negotiation.
The women won. The houses are handed over. The last step is a transfer, and the story is only over when the players confirm it landed.
