Reacting to the payment of the presidential reward, the D'Tigress player Amy Okonkwo said the money was truly life-changing, and thanked President Tinubu, the First Lady, the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Basketball Federation.

A one-off payment is life-changing when it is large relative to everything else a person earns. For an athlete on a stable professional contract, a single bonus usually is not. For most women's basketball players, in most of the world, it is.

Not a bigger reward. A published appearance fee and a published bonus schedule, paid on a date, so that a player's income does not depend on whether a tournament was won and whether a promise was remembered.

Okonkwo thanked everybody, which is what athletes do. The structure she was thanking is the one that made the money remarkable in the first place.
