A Super Eagles Goalkeeper Is Now A Captain In The NPFL

Bendel Insurance have named the Super Eagles goalkeeper Amas Obasogie as club captain. The 26-year-old returned to the Benin Arsenals for a second spell, and the striker Kayode Oke has been named his deputy.

Why this is worth more than a squad note

Because a capped international in the NPFL is unusual, and one who left and came back is more unusual still. The default career shape for a Nigerian player good enough for the national team is a move abroad at the first opportunity and no return until the very end.

What a returning international brings. Standards, mostly. Players who have been in an international camp know what the preparation is supposed to look like, and that knowledge spreads through a dressing room faster than any coaching course.

Goalkeepers and the Nigerian problem

Nigeria has produced an enormous number of outfield players for European leagues and comparatively few goalkeepers. The position needs continuity, coaching and games, and it is the one where a player benefits least from sitting on a bench abroad.

It is the position where playing every week matters most.

A goalkeeper playing thirty NPFL matches is better prepared than one watching thirty from a Championship bench. Nigerian football does not usually believe that.

The captaincy part

Handing the armband to a 26-year-old on a second spell is a bet on him staying. It is also the kind of decision that gives a domestic club a reason to be followed: a recognisable name, in a defined role, at a club with an identity.

The NPFL's problem has never been the absence of stories like this. It is that they are carried by three outlets and read by almost nobody outside Benin City.
