Joseph Yobo Has Joined The Push To Overhaul Nigerian Football

Sports

Joseph Yobo has joined the federal government's push for a major overhaul of Nigerian football, lining up with Shehu Dikko in the reform effort.

Nigerian football reform has been announced, in some form, before almost every recent election cycle. That does not make this one hollow. It does mean the test is specific.

Why a former captain is a useful recruit

Credibility, and a particular kind of knowledge. Yobo captained the national team and has worked on the coaching side since, which means he has seen the camp logistics, the bonus disputes and the late arrivals from the inside. Administrators rarely have that view and players rarely get a seat at the table.

The risk that comes with it. Former players are frequently used as the public face of reforms they do not control, which spends their credibility without changing the structure. The question to ask of any such appointment is what decision the person can actually take.

What an overhaul would have to touch

AreaThe recurring failure
Domestic leagueFixtures that move, disputed results
Youth pathwaysAge fraud, and no national register
National team financeBonuses agreed late, paid later
Federation governanceElections litigated rather than settled

All four have generated a public crisis in the last decade.

Nigerian football does not lack plans. It lacks anybody obliged to publish whether the last one worked.

The three things that would make it real

  • A written mandate saying what the group can decide and what it can only recommend.
  • A deadline, with a report published on it whether or not the news is good.
  • A baseline: the numbers as they stand today, so improvement is measurable rather than asserted.

The uncomfortable context

This is happening while the government has just paid out D'Tigress rewards that took months, and while the Super Falcons were still waiting on theirs. Reform announced by the same structures that produced those delays is worth supporting and worth checking.
