Amokachi And Adepoju Are Being Brought Back For One Night

Afreximbank and TopTier Sports Management have announced a legends football match to be played at the Creative Africa Nexus weekend in Lagos, honouring the Nigerian football generation of the 1990s. Daniel Amokachi and Mutiu Adepoju are among those named.

Why the 1990s and not another decade

Because it is the decade Nigerian football has never stopped measuring itself against: the 1994 AFCON title, a first World Cup appearance the same year, Olympic gold in Atlanta in 1996. That side is the benchmark every subsequent Super Eagles team is held to, usually unfairly.

The commercial logic. A legends match sells to people who are now in their forties and fifties, which is the demographic with disposable income and an emotional attachment to those names. It is good business as well as good sentiment.

The question a celebration does not answer

What happens to those players afterwards. Nigerian football has no pension scheme, no transition programme and no structured aftercare for internationals. The pattern is familiar: a generation is celebrated at events, and individually some of them end up fundraising publicly for medical treatment.

It is easier to fill a stadium for a legends match than to fund the thing that would mean nobody had to play in one.

What would make this more than an evening

A share of the gate and the sponsorship going into a standing welfare fund for former internationals, published and audited. The money is being raised anyway. The only question is whether it ends when the floodlights go off.

Amokachi and Adepoju will draw a crowd. They should. The generation after them will need something more durable than applause.
