Michael Olise Scored Twice, And Nigeria Was Watching Anyway

Michael Olise scored twice as Bayern Munich opened their Champions League campaign with a 5-0 win over Bodo/Glimt at the Allianz Arena. The scoring began after a goalless first half and an injury to the Bodo goalkeeper Nikita Haikin.
He is Nigerian-eligible. He plays for France. Both of those facts get restated in Nigeria every time he does something like this.
The recurring conversation
Nigeria has lost a meaningful number of dual-eligible players to European federations over the last two decades, and each one produces the same three arguments: that the NFF was too slow, that the player chose money or prestige, and that it would not happen if the domestic structures were better.

Nigeria keeps trying to win these arguments on social media, and keeps losing them in living rooms in London and Paris three years earlier.
The federations that do this well
They identify dual-eligible teenagers early, send someone in person, involve the family, and make an honest case about minutes. It is unglamorous relationship work carried out years before anybody is famous, and it is the opposite of a press statement issued the week a player scores twice in the Champions League.
Who is still in reach
That is the useful question, and it requires a list the NFF has never published: the under-twenty and under-twenty-one players with Nigerian eligibility currently in European academies, and who has spoken to them. Nigeria has the largest such pool of any African country and the least systematic approach to it.
Olise is not coming back. The next one might not have to leave.
