Where the money in Nigerian music actually comes from

Only the first line produces numbers an outsider can check.

Streaming is the most visible income and, for most Nigerian artists, far from the largest. An act with strong local numbers can earn considerably more from one week of shows abroad than from a year of domestic streams.

Why balance screenshots became a genre

Because visible wealth is a marketing asset in a market where booking fees are negotiated on perceived status. A large number on a screen is not really addressed to fans. It is addressed to promoters, brands and rivals.

The screenshot is not a boast so much as a rate card.

Portable's question, taken at face value

Stripped of the theatre, he asked how the money is made. That is a reasonable question in an industry with no published earnings, no audited royalty reporting and a long history of artists discovering years later that they were owed money nobody could trace.

The connection to a bigger story. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde said this week that thirty years in Nollywood produced no royalties. Nigerian music has a version of the same gap, and both come back to the absence of auditable reporting.

What would end this category of argument

Distributor-level statements that artists can actually read, and a collecting society that publishes what it distributes. Neither is glamorous and neither generates a headline.

Until then, Nigerian music will keep settling questions about money with screenshots, and screenshots will keep proving nothing.
