Burna Boy And Shakira Hit A Billion Views In Three Months

Burna Boy And Shakira Hit A Billion Views In Three Months

Music

Dai Dai, the collaboration between Shakira and Burna Boy, has passed one billion views on YouTube three months after release. It is the first song released in 2026 to get there.

A billion is a real number and it deserves the headline. It is also worth understanding what produced it.

Three months is the part to notice

Songs reach a billion views on YouTube fairly regularly. Doing it in a quarter is unusual, and it almost never happens on the strength of an audience discovering a track organically. It happens when a song is attached to something with its own global calendar.

The attachment here. Dai Dai has circulated in connection with the 2026 World Cup, which supplies months of scheduled global attention that no marketing budget can buy outright.

What this is and is not evidence of

  • It is evidence that an Afrobeats artist can be the co-lead on a genuinely global record rather than a featured verse near the end.
  • It is not evidence that Nigerian music has broken through on its own terms. The vehicle was a global sporting event and a Colombian superstar with three decades of worldwide distribution.
The interesting question is not whether Burna Boy can reach a billion people. It is who owns the pipe that got him there.

Where the value settles

YouTube views generate advertising revenue split between rights holders. On a collaboration of this kind, the split is negotiated long before release, and the party with the larger catalogue and the stronger label position usually takes the better end.

Nigerian artists have got much better at these negotiations in the last five years. They are still generally negotiating with counterparties who own more of the chain.

The thing to build on

A billion views is a moment. What converts it into an industry is whether Nigerian rights holders capture publishing and master rights on the next one, and whether the next global attachment features a Nigerian artist because a Nigerian company put them there.
