Music

Dai Dai, the official song of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by Shakira and Burna Boy, has passed one billion views on YouTube. Released on 23 May, it is the first song released in 2026 to reach the mark and sits among the ten fastest videos in the platform's history to get there.

What a World Cup song does that a hit cannot

It gets played whether or not anyone chose it. Opening ceremony in Mexico City, halftime at the final, every highlights package, every montage, in every market at once for a month. No amount of promotion buys that distribution, and it is why the official song slot is the single most valuable placement in popular music.

Royalties from the record go to the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund.

The separate milestone. Burna Boy also crossed four billion career views on YouTube this month, reported as a first for a Nigerian artist. That number is built on the back catalogue, from On The Low and Ye through Last Last, rather than on any single record. The two achievements are different in kind: one is a decade of work, the other is one song in one summer.

The Nigerian question underneath it

An Afrobeats artist did not feature on the World Cup song. He is one of the two artists it belongs to.

Nigerian music has spent a decade being described as arriving. A co-lead credit on the official song of the largest sporting event on earth, performed at both the opening and the final, is a different category of statement to a festival slot or a chart placing. It is the part of the industry that no ministry, agency or policy document contributed anything to.
