Yemi Alade Has Put Her Own Name On Her Seventh Album

Yemi Alade has released her seventh studio album, It's Yemi Alade, with features including Don Jazzy, Teni and Spyro. It follows the singles she put out earlier this month and lands as a deliberate summary of a career rather than a reset.
Self-titling is a decision, not a default
Artists usually self-title a debut, because nobody knows the name yet, or much later, because the name has become the genre. Alade is doing the second thing. Seven albums in, with a continental audience built largely outside Nigeria's own charts, the title is the argument.

The commercial reality behind it
Afrobeats album releases now compete against an environment built for singles, where playlist placement decides the first week and the long tail decides everything else. An artist with Alade's back catalogue has an advantage in that maths, because her older records still stream. What a new album has to do is convert that inherited traffic into attention for songs released this week, which is the hardest part of the job.
