Wande Coal Has Put Out King Coal

Wande Coal Has Put Out King Coal

Music

Wande Coal has released a new album, King Coal.

Not a debut, not a comeback, and not an anniversary. Just a record, from an artist who has been making them since before most of today's Afrobeats audience was listening.

Why his name keeps coming up in other people's interviews

Because Wande Coal is the artist Nigerian artists cite. His vocal approach, his melodic phrasing and his early work with Mo'Hits shaped a great deal of what became the default sound of Afrobeats, and he has never had the commercial scale that his influence would suggest.

The gap between influence and income. They are different things and they are not correlated. An artist can define how a generation sings and be out-earned many times over by the people who learned it from him.

What an album means at this stage of a career

Career stageWhat an album is for
EarlyEstablishing that you exist
PeakConverting attention into scale
EstablishedCatalogue, and a reason to tour

The third row is where the durable money is, and where the least coverage is.

Nigerian music reports debuts and milestones. The records made by people who simply kept going get a paragraph.

The context of the week

Asake has just passed 200 million streams on a second song and Davido's Oriade crossed 100 million. Those are the numbers that travel. A Wande Coal album will not produce a headline of that shape, and it is the kind of release that keeps an artist's catalogue earning for another decade.

The thing worth watching

Whether the younger artists who cite him turn up on it or around it. Nigerian music's development pipeline runs almost entirely on established figures pointing at people, and it works in both directions: a senior artist gets a second life when the generation he influenced brings their audience back to him.

Fifteen years in, still releasing albums, still the name other singers mention. That is a career most Nigerian artists do not get to have.
