Mo Bimpe Had To Explain A Two-Second Clip From A Film Premiere
Lagos · Monday 7 September 2026
Mo Bimpe has responded to a wave of reaction over a short clip of her interacting with the actor Jide Awobona at the premiere of Mama Deola. Her answer was brief: her husband, Lateef Adedimeji, is a secure man.
What actually happened
Two colleagues greeted each other at a work event that exists specifically to be photographed. A few seconds of it circulated without the surrounding footage.
The asymmetry worth naming
Nigerian entertainment audiences produce this reaction overwhelmingly about married women. A male actor greeting a female colleague at a premiere does not generate three days of speculation about his marriage, and the same clip involving two men generates nothing at all.
The story was never about what happened. It was about who was in it.
The trap in the response
Mo Bimpe's answer was gracious and it also accepted the premise: that something required explaining, and that her husband's comfort was the relevant test. The alternative, saying nothing, carries its own cost, because silence gets read as confirmation.
There is no version of this where the person in the clip wins. That is worth remembering before the next one circulates.
The bit that gets lost
Mama Deola had a premiere. Somebody made a film, other people financed it, and a room full of professionals turned up to support it. None of that got the coverage the two seconds did.
