Malawi Name 32-Player Provisional Squad Ahead of Historic WAFCON Debut Against Super Falcons
Malawi head coach Lovemore Fazili has announced a 32-member provisional squad as the Scorchers begin preparations for their first-ever appearance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The team is expected to open camp at Mpira Village in Blantyre on Sunday as they step up preparations for the tournament in Morocco.
Fazili retained the core group of players that have represented Malawi throughout the year, showing confidence in the squad that helped secure the nation’s historic qualification.
The Scorchers have been drawn in Group C alongside defending champions Nigeria, Zambia and Egypt, setting up a challenging campaign against some of Africa’s strongest women’s football nations.
Malawi will begin their WAFCON journey against the Super Falcons at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on Monday, July 28.
Opinion: Malawi’s debut at WAFCON is already a major achievement, but facing Nigeria in their opening match will be a huge test of their progress. The Scorchers will be underdogs, yet tournament newcomers often play with freedom and determination, making them a team that cannot be overlooked. For Nigeria, the match will be a reminder that defending a title requires focus from the very first whistle.
