Troy Deeney Slams England Wingers After Unconvincing World Cup Win Over Panama
Former Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Troy Deeney has delivered a strong criticism of England’s attacking players following their 2-0 victory over Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
England manager Thomas Tuchel made five changes to the team that played out a goalless draw against Ghana, but the adjustments did little to improve the Three Lions’ attacking rhythm.
Morgan Rogers struggled to build a strong partnership with Jude Bellingham in midfield, while Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka showed only moments of their quality during the match.
Saka, making his first start of the tournament, was substituted after just over an hour, with Noni Madueke replacing him. However, Deeney felt the Chelsea winger also failed to make a positive impact.
Speaking on CBS Sports, Deeney highlighted the number of times England’s wide players lost possession, pointing to Saka losing the ball 14 times, Rashford 20 times and Madueke seven times.
He argued that such mistakes would only be acceptable if the players were creating consistent danger through their creativity and decision-making.
Deeney also criticised the attitude of England’s wingers, suggesting they underestimated their opponents.
“They were arrogant and ignorant,” Deeney said, adding that playing for a major club does not guarantee an easy advantage against international opponents.
The former striker praised England’s defenders and Elliot Anderson for providing a strong foundation, but felt the attacking players failed to take advantage of the opportunities created.
Opinion: Deeney’s criticism reflects a wider expectation on England’s talented attacking players. Having world-class ability is not enough at a major tournament; consistency, decision-making and respect for every opponent are what separate good teams from champions. England have quality, but they must find a better balance between confidence and concentration.
