Gary Neville Urges Tuchel to Drop Gordon and Spence for England’s Final Group Match
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has advised England manager Thomas Tuchel to make changes to his starting lineup ahead of the Three Lions’ final group stage match against Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
England currently sit top of their group but are yet to officially secure qualification for the Round of 32 after collecting a win and a draw from their opening two matches.
Tuchel’s side began the tournament with an impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia before being held to a goalless draw by Ghana.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville suggested that Tuchel should consider replacing Anthony Gordon on the left side of attack with Morgan Rogers, especially if Panama decide to defend deeply.
“I don’t want to criticize Anthony Gordon too harshly because I believe he is a talented player. He has faced two challenging games, but I didn’t think Marcus Rashford should be positioned on that left side,” Neville said.
“I genuinely believe it should be Morgan Rogers. I think we need someone who can connect better on that flank for us.”
Neville explained that while Gordon and Rashford offer pace and attacking threat on counter-attacks, England may need more creativity and composure against a team expected to sit back.
The former England international also suggested that Nico O’Reilly could replace Djed Spence, saying he respects Spence’s work rate but believes O’Reilly may provide more balance.
Gordon has started both of England’s matches so far, while Spence featured from the start against Ghana.
England only need a draw against Panama to guarantee progression to the knockout stage.
Opinion: Neville’s comments reflect a common tactical debate in tournament football — whether to rely on explosive players or choose those better suited to breaking down defensive opponents. Against Panama, England may need patience and creativity, but Tuchel’s decision will depend on how much he values consistency versus tactical adjustments.
