2026/27 NPFL Season to Kick Off August 28 as Rangers Begin Title Defence Journey
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has announced that the 2026/27 season will officially begin on Friday, August 28, 2026, with clubs set to resume the battle for domestic football supremacy.
The league campaign is scheduled to run until May 30, 2027, as teams prepare for another competitive season filled with title ambitions, survival battles, and the race for continental qualification.
According to the approved calendar, the first half of the season will end with Matchday 19 in December before the league takes a short break from December 23 to January 6.
The second transfer window will open throughout January 2027, giving clubs the opportunity to strengthen their squads before the second phase of the campaign resumes.
The NPFL calendar will also include the President Federation Cup, with state playoff matches expected to take place in early February 2027.
Defending champions Rangers International will enter the new season as the team to beat after securing their ninth league title last season.
Opinion: New season brings fresh hope, but consistency remains the real challenge
The early announcement of the NPFL schedule gives clubs enough time to plan properly, strengthen their squads, and avoid the last-minute preparations that have affected many teams in previous seasons.
Rangers’ success last term showed the importance of stability and smart squad management, but defending the title could prove even harder as other clubs look to challenge their dominance.
For the NPFL to continue growing, attention must remain on improving match organisation, stadium experience, player development, and attracting more supporters. A well-structured season could help push the league closer to becoming one of Africa’s most respected football competitions.
