Thierry Henry Predicts ‘Special’ World Cup Clash as Morocco Face Canada in Round of 16

Thierry Henry Predicts ‘Special’ World Cup Clash as Morocco Face Canada in Round of 16

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry believes the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash between Morocco and Canada has all the ingredients to become a memorable encounter.

Henry praised Morocco’s fearless approach after the North African side eliminated the Netherlands in a dramatic Round of 32 tie. The former France striker highlighted the confidence shown by coach Mohamed Ouahbi and his players, insisting they are not approaching the tournament as underdogs.

“I like how they approached the game. The coach said at the beginning that we are not scared of anyone, we are not underdogs. We are here to try to play,” Henry said during analysis on Fox Sports.

He added: “The Morocco game against Canada will be special.”

Morocco secured their place in the last 16 after a tense battle with the Netherlands ended 1-1 after extra time, before the Atlas Lions won 3-2 on penalties.

Canada, meanwhile, became one of the first teams to advance after defeating South Africa 1-0, with Stephen Eustaquio scoring a late winner to send the co-hosts through.

The two nations will now meet at Houston Stadium on Saturday for a place in the quarter-finals.

Opinion: A clash of ambition, belief and a changing football landscape

This fixture represents more than just a knockout match. Morocco’s rise in recent years has shown that African teams can compete with the world’s best, while Canada’s progress reflects the rapid growth of football in North America.

Morocco will enter the game with confidence after overcoming a strong European opponent, but Canada’s home advantage and tournament momentum could make them a difficult opponent.

Henry’s prediction of a “special” game may not be an exaggeration — both teams have already proven they belong on football’s biggest stage, and this encounter could become another reminder that the gap between traditional football powers and emerging nations continues to shrink.
