Tanzanian Authorities Rule Influencer Ashlee Jenae's Death a Suicide, Family Questions Findings
Tanzanian authorities have concluded that American social media influencer Ashlee Jenae, born Ashly Robinson, died by suicide following what investigators described as a period of severe mental distress.
The 31-year-old New Jersey native was found dead on April 9 at the Zuri Zanzibar Resort, just days after becoming engaged to cryptocurrency entrepreneur Joe McCann during a safari vacation in Tanzania.
According to officials, the investigation has now been closed after authorities reviewed evidence, including text messages retrieved from Robinson's devices. Speaking at a press conference, Deputy Director of Criminal Investigations Zuberi Chembera said the messages revealed recurring expressions of dissatisfaction with her personal circumstances and indicated that she had been experiencing significant emotional distress before her death.
Authorities stated that no other individual was implicated in the case.
Investigators disclosed that hotel staff had witnessed a heated argument between Robinson and McCann hours before her death. The disagreement reportedly became intense enough that resort staff temporarily moved McCann to a separate room. He later returned with a security guard to check on Robinson and discovered her unresponsive.
A local medical report listed the official cause of death as cerebral hypoxia resulting from strangulation and suffocation.
McCann, founder of crypto investment firm Asymmetric Financial, was initially questioned as a witness and had his passport temporarily withheld during the investigation. However, authorities emphasized that he was never considered a suspect.
Following the conclusion of the investigation, McCann released a statement mourning Robinson's passing, describing her as a bright and compassionate person whose memory he hopes to honor.
Despite the official findings, Robinson's family has publicly challenged the conclusion reached by Tanzanian authorities.
Her parents have raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding her death, including what they describe as an 11-hour delay before they were informed of her passing. Family members have also questioned whether suicide aligns with the personality and outlook of someone they describe as energetic, optimistic, and full of life.
Her younger sister specifically rejected the suggestion that Robinson would have taken her own life, saying the conclusion does not reflect the person their family knew.
The family has indicated that they will continue seeking answers and remain in contact with officials as they pursue further clarity regarding the case.
