DR Congo Exit 2026 World Cup After Brave Fight Against England, Join African Teams Eliminated
The Democratic Republic of Congo have become the fourth African nation to exit the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a 2-1 defeat to England in the Round of 32.
The Leopards produced a strong performance and stunned England when Brian Cipenga fired home a superb finish past Jordan Pickford to give DR Congo the lead.
However, England captain Harry Kane proved to be the difference as the Bayern Munich forward scored twice to complete a comeback victory for Thomas Tuchel’s side.
Despite DR Congo’s efforts and a controversial penalty decision involving Kane, the African side could not hold on as England advanced to the Round of 16, where they will face co-hosts Mexico.
DR Congo now join Tunisia, Côte d’Ivoire, and South Africa as African teams eliminated from the tournament.
Opinion:
DR Congo may leave the competition disappointed, but their performance showed the growing strength and competitiveness of African football. Taking the lead against a major football nation like England on the World Cup stage was a statement of their potential.
The result also reflects a familiar challenge for African teams at major tournaments — competing well but struggling to convert strong performances into knockout victories. The next step for African football is turning these brave displays into more consistent results when the pressure is highest.
