Luis de la Fuente Hails Dani Olmo and Rodri as Spain March Into 2026 World Cup Final

Luis de la Fuente Hails Dani Olmo and Rodri as Spain March Into 2026 World Cup Final

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has lavished praise on midfield duo Dani Olmo and Rodri after their outstanding performances inspired La Roja to a convincing 2-0 victory over France in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The European champions booked their place in the final thanks to first-half penalty from Mikel Oyarzabal and a composed second-half finish by Pedro Porro, with Olmo playing a pivotal role by providing the assist for the decisive second goal.

Speaking after the match, De la Fuente described Olmo as a "spectacular footballer" whose intelligence and versatility continue to make him one of Spain's most influential players.

"He is a spectacular footballer with a versatile position. He plays box-to-box and can occupy various roles, particularly between the lines as a midfielder. His development aligns closely with the national team," De la Fuente said.

The Spanish manager explained that Olmo thrives within Spain's possession-based system, crediting the team's chemistry for allowing the Barcelona midfielder to express his creativity.

"He performs better with these players around him, allowing him to showcase his brilliance. This is a shared understanding. I value his abilities highly, but also the team dynamic. He is a genius in his role."

De la Fuente also reserved special praise for Manchester City midfielder Rodri, describing him as the heartbeat of Spain's tactical setup.

"I mentioned long ago that questioning him is an insult to intelligence. Time has proven us correct. He is the perfect player for our football philosophy."

The coach highlighted Rodri's exceptional positional awareness, defensive intelligence and ability to dictate the tempo of games.

"Rodri serves as the backbone. In terms of interpreting defensive football, he possesses excellent touches, positioning and ball recovery skills. He is a vital player for our football philosophy. We are fortunate to have such a talent."

Spain will now face either England or Argentina in the World Cup final as they seek to become world champions for the second time in their history.

Opinion:

Spain's victory over France was not built on individual brilliance alone—it was a masterclass in collective football. While stars like Lamine Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal grabbed the headlines, Dani Olmo and Rodri quietly controlled every important phase of the match. De la Fuente deserves enormous credit for building a team where every player understands their role, making Spain arguably the most balanced side at the tournament. If they reproduce this level of performance in the final, stopping La Roja will be an enormous challenge for either England or Argentina.
