Deschamps Questions Referee's Standard After France Crash Out of 2026 World Cup

Deschamps Questions Referee's Standard After France Crash Out of 2026 World Cup

France head coach Didier Deschamps has openly questioned the standard of officiating after Les Bleus suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Spain in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The European heavyweights were outplayed as Spain produced a commanding display to book their place in the final. Mikel Oyarzabal gave La Roja the lead from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute after Lucas Digne fouled Lamine Yamal inside the box, before Pedro Porro sealed the victory with a composed finish early in the second half.

France endured a frustrating evening from the outset. Adrien Rabiot received an early yellow card in the ninth minute, while Digne's challenge on Yamal ultimately proved costly as Oyarzabal converted the resulting penalty.

Speaking after the match, Deschamps expressed dissatisfaction with referee Ivan Burton's performance and questioned whether the official was qualified to handle a World Cup semi-final.

"I will ask a question… does the referee have the necessary level to officiate a World Cup semi-final?" Deschamps said, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

However, the statistics reflected Spain's dominance beyond any refereeing controversy. France failed to register a single shot on target in the first half and struggled to create meaningful chances throughout the contest, finishing with an expected goals (xG) tally of just 0.31.

Spain, meanwhile, controlled possession, dictated the tempo and limited Kylian Mbappe and his teammates to one of their poorest attacking displays of the tournament.

The defeat ends France's hopes of lifting the World Cup, with Deschamps' side now set to compete in the third-place playoff.

Reports have also suggested that the long-serving French coach intends to step down after the tournament, with World Cup-winning legend Zinedine Zidane widely expected to take over the national team.

Opinion:

While Didier Deschamps is entitled to question refereeing decisions, France's performance offered little evidence that officiating determined the outcome. Spain were superior in virtually every department—from possession and movement to chance creation and defensive organization. France's inability to produce a shot on target before halftime and their meagre attacking output suggest the bigger issue was tactical execution rather than the referee. If Deschamps does leave after the tournament, it would mark the end of an era, but his successor will inherit a talented squad capable of quickly returning to the summit of international football.
