Arsenal Legend Santi Cazorla Linked With Emotional Return in Coaching Role
Former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla could be set for an emotional return to the Emirates Stadium after retiring from professional football, according to reports.
Football London claims the 41-year-old is being considered for a coaching role at Arsenal, where he remains one of the club's most admired former players.
Cazorla recently brought the curtain down on an illustrious playing career after concluding his final season with his boyhood club, Real Oviedo. The former Spain international enjoyed successful spells in Spain, England and Qatar before deciding to retire.
During his six years at Arsenal, Cazorla became a fan favourite thanks to his exceptional technical ability, creativity and professionalism. However, a series of serious injuries disrupted the latter part of his time in North London and ultimately forced him to leave the club.
A return has long been viewed as a possibility. Speaking to Sky Sports in 2024, Cazorla revealed he had held discussions with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, his former teammate, about a potential reunion.
"I hold a very special affection for Arsenal," Cazorla said.
"I enjoyed six wonderful years there, and I am aware of the affection the fans have for me."
He added that while Arsenal had always kept the door open for his return, his priority at the time was finishing his playing career with Real Oviedo.
"After that, we will see what the future brings. It is evident that Arsenal has always kept the door open for my return."
Arteta has also previously spoken highly of Cazorla, praising his football intelligence and leadership qualities—attributes that could make him a valuable addition to Arsenal's coaching setup.
With his retirement now official, speculation is expected to grow over whether the Spaniard will begin the next chapter of his football journey back at the club where he remains a beloved figure.
Opinion
A coaching return for Santi Cazorla would feel like a natural progression rather than a sentimental appointment. Few former players understand Arsenal's culture as well as he does, and his technical expertise could prove invaluable in developing the club's young talents. While success as a player does not automatically translate into coaching excellence, Cazorla's football intelligence and respected personality suggest he has the qualities to make a meaningful impact if he joins Mikel Arteta's backroom staff.
