World Cup 2026: Ibrahimovic Backs England for Glory, Says Kane Holds the Key
Former Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic believes England have a genuine chance of lifting the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy if captain Harry Kane maintains his outstanding goalscoring form.
Speaking after England’s dramatic 2-1 victory over DR Congo in the Round of 32, Ibrahimovic praised Kane’s match-winning display, which saw the Bayern Munich striker score twice to inspire the Three Lions' comeback after falling behind.
The victory secured England's place in the Round of 16, where Thomas Tuchel's side will continue their quest for a first World Cup title since 1966.
Reflecting on Kane’s influence, Ibrahimovic highlighted the striker’s all-round contribution beyond just scoring.
“Harry Kane, he did three things. Two goals and one run he did,” Ibrahimovic said on Fox Sports.
He also compared England’s reliance on Kane to the way Argentina depend on Lionel Messi, while acknowledging that other title contenders possess multiple match-winners.
“We talk about Messi for Argentina, France with Mbappe, but they have other superstars also. Sir Harry Kane is England, and the way he performed today, he needs to continue like that if this England is going to have a chance.”
Kane's latest brace further strengthened his remarkable World Cup record and reinforced his importance to Tuchel’s side as the knockout stages intensify.
Opinion
Ibrahimovic’s assessment reflects what England’s performances have shown so far. Kane remains the team's driving force in crucial moments, but winning a World Cup demands more than one exceptional player. If England are to end decades of hurt, the supporting cast must consistently rise alongside their captain. Kane can provide the goals, but lifting the trophy will ultimately depend on the entire squad delivering when the pressure is at its highest.
