Gavi Urges FIFA to Show Leniency After Spain-Argentina World Cup Final Scuffle

Spain midfielder Gavi has appealed to FIFA not to impose further sanctions on Leandro Paredes and other Argentina players involved in the altercation that followed the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

Tempers flared after Spain edged Argentina 1-0 in New Jersey to lift the World Cup trophy, with players from both teams becoming involved in a heated confrontation after the final whistle.

According to reports, Nahuel Molina clashed with Rodri, while Leandro Paredes was involved in an incident with Gavi and Eric Garcia. Another tense exchange also occurred between veteran defender Nicolás Otamendi and Rodri.

Despite being one of the players caught up in the confrontation, Gavi has urged football's governing body not to hand out additional suspensions.

Speaking to reporters in his hometown, as quoted by Barca Universal, the Barcelona midfielder said:

"I don't think they should be suspended. I understand that this doesn't present a good image for the kids, but football has always had a more aggressive and intense side.

"For me, it made sense for them to be punished with a red card to Enzo during the match and for the matter to end there. I see that everything that happened is part of football."

Gavi acknowledged that such scenes are not ideal, particularly for younger fans, but argued that the emotions surrounding a World Cup final can sometimes boil over.

FIFA has yet to announce whether any disciplinary proceedings will be opened against players involved in the post-match altercation.
