Emeka Ike: Love Isn't a Scam, Selfish Motives Are
Veteran Nollywood actor Emeka Ike has shared his thoughts on modern relationships, insisting that love and marriage are not scams but that people with selfish intentions often destroy what should be genuine unions.
Speaking during an interview with the BBC News Pidgin, the actor argued that the real problem begins when relationships are treated as financial opportunities rather than emotional commitments. According to him, some individuals enter relationships with hidden motives, turning what should be built on trust into transactions.
"Love and marriage no be scam. But e get people wey dey hungry wey dey use relationship as meal ticket. Dat na where e become scam," he said.
Emeka stressed that love remains the foundation of every successful relationship and urged women to avoid pursuing wealthy partners solely for financial gain while pretending to be in love.
He also warned against allowing social media to dictate expectations about marriage, noting that every relationship has its own journey. Instead of comparing their homes to the carefully curated lives seen online, he advised couples to focus on understanding one another, resolving conflicts, and building lasting partnerships.
Opinion
Emeka Ike's comments touch on an issue many people quietly acknowledge. In the age of viral relationship content and "soft life" culture, it's becoming increasingly easy to confuse financial security with genuine affection. While financial stability is an important consideration in any relationship, it shouldn't replace sincerity, respect, and emotional compatibility.
At the same time, his advice applies to everyone—not just women. Relationships thrive when both partners are transparent about their intentions and contribute emotionally, mentally, and, where possible, financially. Social media often showcases highlights rather than reality, making unhealthy comparisons inevitable.
Ultimately, successful marriages are rarely built on wealth or online validation alone. They endure because of trust, communication, mutual respect, and a willingness to grow together through life's challenges.
