World Cup 2026: FIFA Overturns Balogun’s Red Card, Clears USA Striker for Belgium Clash

World Cup 2026: FIFA Overturns Balogun’s Red Card, Clears USA Striker for Belgium Clash

FIFA has overturned the red card shown to United States striker Folarin Balogun, making him available for his country's FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium.

The decision comes after Balogun was sent off during the USA's 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina for a challenge on defender Tarik Muharemović.

Ordinarily, the dismissal would have resulted in an automatic one-match suspension, ruling the striker out of the knockout fixture. However, FIFA announced on Sunday that the sanction has been suspended.

In a statement, the world football governing body said:

"In line with Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year.

"If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement."

The ruling means Balogun will be eligible for selection as the United States prepare for a crucial encounter with Belgium, providing a significant boost to the American attack as they aim to reach the quarter-finals.

Opinion

FIFA's decision is likely to divide opinion. On one hand, the governing body appears to have accepted that Balogun's challenge did not warrant the full consequences of a straight red card, especially given the context of the incident. Suspending rather than cancelling the punishment also serves as a warning, placing the striker on probation while allowing him to continue participating in the tournament.

On the other hand, overturning disciplinary decisions during the knockout stage inevitably raises questions about consistency. Fans and teams will expect similar standards to be applied in future cases. Regardless of the debate, the United States receive a major boost, as Balogun's pace and finishing could prove decisive against a talented Belgian side.
