World Cup 2026: Balogun Enters Rare FIFA Record Books After Goal and Red Card in USA Victory

World Cup 2026: Balogun Enters Rare FIFA Record Books After Goal and Red Card in USA Victory

USA forward Folarin Balogun etched his name into FIFA World Cup history after becoming only the fourth player to score a goal and receive a red card in a knockout-stage match.

Balogun found the net as the United States defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in their Round of 32 clash at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on Thursday, helping the co-hosts secure a place in the Round of 16.

However, the 24-year-old's impressive outing took a dramatic turn later in the match when he was shown a straight red card for stepping on the ankle of Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic.

The dismissal places Balogun in an exclusive list of players who have both scored and been sent off in a World Cup knockout fixture. The others are Zinedine Zidane, who was dismissed in the 2006 World Cup final, Ronaldinho, who saw red in Brazil's 2002 quarter-final, and Garrincha, who was sent off during the 1962 semi-final.

Despite the incident, USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino defended his striker, insisting the challenge was accidental rather than malicious.

"Balogun? Never intentional, never a red card," Pochettino said after the match.

"Watching it after on TV, it was never the intention to step onto the player; it's a normal action in football that happens by accident."

Balogun's suspension now presents a selection headache for Pochettino as the USA prepare for the Round of 16 without one of their key attacking threats.

Opinion

Balogun's performance perfectly captured football's unpredictability. He delivered when it mattered most with a crucial goal but left the pitch in disappointment after a controversial dismissal. Whether or not the red card was justified will remain a talking point, but the bigger concern for the USA is how they replace one of their most dangerous forwards at a decisive stage of the tournament. In knockout football, moments of brilliance and lapses in judgment can define a team's destiny.
