Stewart Robson Says Lookman Did Not Get Involved, And The Numbers Agree

Sports

Atletico Madrid lost at San Mames on Saturday. Ademola Lookman started, was substituted on 58 minutes, and finished with one shot and no successful dribble. Speaking on ESPN, the former Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson said Lookman did not really get involved in the game.

That is accurate. It is also not the whole description.

What Robson actually pointed at

The criticism was aimed at Atletico's attacking shape as much as at Lookman personally. Robson's specific observation was that Lookman was isolated on the left, and isolation is a structural condition rather than a personal failing. A wide forward who receives the ball with no overlapping full-back and no near-side midfielder has two options: go alone into two defenders, or recycle it backwards.

Lookman's game has always been built on the first option, and it works when the defender is one on one. Against a compact Athletic Club side at home it was two on one for most of the hour he played.

The bigger question for Nigeria

Lookman is the reigning African Footballer of the Year and the man who scored a hat-trick in a European final. He is not short of ability. He is short of a role at Atletico that resembles the one in which he was that player.

Being the best player at a mid-table Italian club is a different job from being the third option at a Spanish giant, and the second job is harder to look good in.

With Osimhen carrying an adductor injury and Onuachu also hurt, Nigeria's September qualifiers may lean on Lookman for goals rather than for width. That is arguably the better use of him and it is certainly the one his club is not currently offering.

Where the criticism stops being useful

Nigerian discussion of Lookman moves fast between world class and finished, usually inside a single match. Neither reading survives contact with a full season. He is a 26-minute-per-goal player when the structure suits him and an anonymous one when it does not, which describes most forwards on earth.

The thing worth watching is not the ESPN quote. It is whether Diego Simeone's team gives him a second body on the left in the next month. If it does not, the same analysis will be available in October, with the same numbers under it.
