Nigeria Have Qualified For A Cricket World Cup

Nigeria's under-19 women's cricket team beat Zimbabwe by four runs in the final of the Africa Qualifier on Saturday and have booked a place at the ICC Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup. They were unbeaten across the whole competition.
The tournament will be hosted jointly by Bangladesh and Nepal. Africa had one qualifying place available. Nigeria took it.
How they won it
They were defending 98, which in a twenty-over match is a low total and usually a losing one. Christabel Chukwuonye top-scored with 21, Beauty Oguai made 19 and Jessica Bien 15. Then the bowlers held it, with Usen Peace taking three wickets as Zimbabwe fell four short.
The part that should embarrass Nigerian sport
South Africa qualify for these tournaments as a matter of course. They have a domestic structure, school competitions and paid coaching. Nigeria has a federation working with a fraction of that, in a country where cricket is played seriously in a handful of states and almost nowhere on television.
A team from a country with no professional women's cricket has just beaten every other team in Africa except one, and then beaten that one too.
This is now the second story in a fortnight of Nigerian athletes qualifying for a global event in a discipline nobody funds. The pattern is consistent enough that it stops being inspiring and starts being a question about allocation.
What happens between now and the World Cup
The squad needs match practice against non-African opposition, coaching that continues after the qualifier ends, and enough money to travel. Historically the third of those has been the one that fails, and it fails quietly, months later, when nobody is reporting on it any more.
The result is already achieved. Whether anything is built on it is a decision that gets made in an office in Abuja.
