Governor Bassey Otu Rewards Super Falcons Star Miracle Usani with ₦50 Million, Land, and Sports Ambassador Role
Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu has honoured Super Falcons defender, Miracle Usani, with a ₦50 million cash gift, a plot of land, and an appointment as Sports Ambassador of the state.
The gesture came during a special reception held at the Governor’s office in Calabar, where the young football star was celebrated for her contribution to Nigeria’s success at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The 18-year-old left-back, who made her debut appearance at the continental tournament, was part of the Super Falcons squad that lifted the coveted title under coach Justine Madugu. Despite featuring just once, her inclusion in the championship-winning team marks a significant milestone in her blossoming career.
Governor Otu praised Usani’s dedication and described her achievement as a “source of pride” for the people of Cross River State.
“Miracle has brought honour not only to Nigeria but to our dear state. This gesture is to encourage her and inspire other young people to pursue excellence,” the governor said.
💭 Opinion: A Well-Deserved Reward — and a Symbol of Hope for Women’s Football
Governor Otu’s gesture toward Miracle Usani is more than just a reward — it’s a powerful statement about valuing women in sports. Too often, female athletes achieve greatness with little recognition, even when they bring international glory to the country.
At just 18, Usani’s story is one of discipline, faith, and talent meeting opportunity. Her recognition sends a message to thousands of young girls in Nigeria that dreams from local pitches can indeed reach global stages.
This also underscores the importance of state-level support in nurturing sporting talents. Cross River has long been a cradle for Nigerian athletes, and Governor Otu’s move could reignite a culture of investment in grassroots sports — one that prioritizes female inclusion.
Miracle’s name couldn’t be more fitting. Her rise from a young local player to an African champion mirrors the kind of story that keeps Nigerian football alive — a reminder that with the right support, miracles truly happen in sports.
