Uganda Captain Khalid Aucho Confident Ahead of Tough AFCON 2025 Group Featuring Nigeria and Tunisia

Uganda Captain Khalid Aucho Confident Ahead of Tough AFCON 2025 Group Featuring Nigeria and Tunisia

Uganda captain Khalid Aucho has exuded confidence as the Cranes prepare for a tough challenge at the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Drawn in Group D alongside continental powerhouses Nigeria and Tunisia, as well as regional rivals Tanzania, Uganda faces what many have dubbed a group of death. The Super Eagles and the Carthage Eagles are widely tipped to dominate the group, given their pedigree and depth.

But Aucho, never one to back down from a fight, insists the Cranes are not in Morocco just to make up the numbers.

“It’s not an easy group. These are big nations, all with ambition to lead the table. But we also know our capabilities,” Aucho told CAFonline.

“With the experience we have added to the squad, we can combine well and compete. It will be tough, but I believe we can advance to the next round.”

Uganda, who were runners-up in 1978, will be making their ninth AFCON appearance. The team has grown steadily over the years, blending youthful energy with a few seasoned campaigners — and Aucho’s leadership remains a vital pillar for their campaign.

The 2025 AFCON tournament officially kicks off on December 21 in Morocco, and Group D is already shaping up to be one of the most competitive.

💭 Opinion: Uganda’s Belief Is the Spirit African Football Needs

Khalid Aucho’s optimism isn’t just refreshing — it’s inspiring. For a nation often viewed as an underdog, Uganda’s hunger to compete at the top level speaks volumes about the new wave of ambition across African football.

Yes, the odds are stacked against them. Nigeria boasts stars like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, while Tunisia’s disciplined style and experience make them perennial contenders. But football has always been a game of surprises — and the Cranes’ determination could very well ruffle a few feathers.

If Uganda can stay organized, maintain composure, and capitalize on their moments, they could become one of the tournament’s dark horses. After all, belief and teamwork have dethroned giants before — and in the AFCON, where passion meets unpredictability, anything is possible.

Uganda may be walking into battle, but with Aucho leading the charge, they certainly aren’t walking in fear.
