AFCON 2025: Éric Chelle Eyes Strong Start as Super Eagles Open Campaign Against Tanzania
Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has underlined the importance of a winning start as Nigeria prepares to kick off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign against Tanzania on Tuesday in Fès, Morocco.
According to TalkTalk Nigeria, the three-time African champions will begin life in Group C against the Taifa Stars, before facing Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles and Uganda’s Cranes in what promises to be a tightly contested group. With only the top two teams guaranteed automatic qualification to the Round of 16, early points could prove decisive.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Chelle made it clear that his focus is firmly on starting the tournament on the right foot.
“We’re happy to be here. This is a big game because this is the first game and the first game is very important. For sure, we want to win this game,” the Super Eagles coach said.
Meanwhile, Tunisia and Uganda will face off in the group’s other fixture on the same day, adding extra significance to Nigeria’s opening encounter.
Opinion: A Fast Start Could Define Nigeria’s AFCON Journey
Chelle’s emphasis on the opening match reflects a familiar truth in tournament football: first impressions matter. A convincing win against Tanzania would not only boost confidence within the Super Eagles camp but also send a strong message to rivals in Group C.
Nigeria’s squad depth and pedigree make them favourites, but AFCON has a long history of early upsets. Dropping points in the opener could pile unnecessary pressure on later clashes against Tunisia and Uganda.
For the Super Eagles, this is more than just a first game — it’s an opportunity to set the tone, establish momentum and remind Africa why Nigeria remains one of the continent’s football heavyweights. A positive start may well be the foundation for a deep run in Morocco.
