AFCON 2025: Tanzania Coach Vows Attacking Approach Against Super Eagles
Tanzania’s head coach, Miguel Gamond, has made his intentions clear ahead of his side’s opening fixture against Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, promising an ambitious and fearless approach against the Super Eagles.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Monday, Gamond said Tanzania will not sit back or play with fear, despite facing one of Africa’s most decorated football nations. Instead, the Taifa Stars will look to play their game, keep possession and attack Éric Chelle’s men when the opportunity arises.
“We are excited to participate in this AFCON, and we are ready for tomorrow’s game against Nigeria,” Gamond said. “It will be a very difficult and tough game, but it is also a very nice challenge for us. We need to work and try to neutralize Nigeria, but our mentality is to play, try to get the ball and attack as well.”
Nigeria are set to face Tanzania on Tuesday evening in Morocco, in what will be a crucial Group C encounter. The group also features Uganda and Tunisia, making every point vital in the race for qualification to the knockout stages.
Opinion: Bold Words, Bigger Test
Gamond’s comments will resonate with neutral fans who crave brave football at major tournaments. Choosing to attack Nigeria is a bold statement — and potentially a risky one — given the Super Eagles’ pace, physicality and experience on the big stage.
However, AFCON history has shown time and again that underdogs who play with belief often trouble favourites. Tanzania’s confidence could unsettle Nigeria if the Super Eagles fail to start with focus and intensity.
For Nigeria, this match is a reminder that no opponent will roll over. For Tanzania, it is a chance to announce themselves and prove they belong at Africa’s biggest football party. Whether bravery will be rewarded or punished remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the stage is set for an intriguing opening clash.
