FIFA Ranking: Super Eagles Finish 2025 38th Globally, Eye AFCON Boost

FIFA Ranking: Super Eagles Finish 2025 38th Globally, Eye AFCON Boost

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will close out 2025 ranked 38th in the world, according to the latest FIFA Men’s Ranking released on Monday. Éric Chelle’s side also retained their status as the fifth-best team in Africa, underlining Nigeria’s consistent presence among the continent’s elite despite mixed results over the year.

The three-time African champions currently trail Morocco, Senegal, Algeria and Egypt on the African ladder. While the position reflects Nigeria’s competitiveness, it also highlights the fine margins separating Africa’s top sides — and the opportunity for movement with strong tournament performances.

Encouragingly, the Super Eagles have an immediate chance to climb the rankings at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. A deep run — or lifting the trophy — would not only restore continental bragging rights but also deliver a significant boost in FIFA points, potentially pushing Nigeria closer to the world’s top 30.

At the summit of global football, Spain remain number one, staying ahead of world champions Argentina, while France, England and Brazil round out the top five. The next FIFA men’s ranking update is scheduled for January 19, 2026.

Opinion: Ranking Is a Marker — AFCON Is the Statement

For Nigeria, 38th is neither a failure nor a triumph; it’s a marker. It suggests stability, but also unfinished business. With the talent pool available — from Europe-based stars to emerging homegrown prospects — the Super Eagles are capable of more than a mid-30s ranking.

AFCON offers the perfect stage to turn promise into proof. Rankings may shape perception, but trophies shape legacy. If Chelle’s team can blend discipline with flair and maintain consistency, a climb up the FIFA ladder will follow naturally. For now, the focus is simple: perform in Morocco, and let the numbers take care of themselves.
