BBNaija Star Saskay Reflects on the Challenges of Studying in Europe: “It’s a Different Kind of Learning”

Former Big Brother Naija housemate, Tsakute Ladi Jonah, popularly known as Saskay, has shared her experience of adapting to a new educational system in Europe.

In a heartfelt post on her 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) page, Saskay reflected on the stark contrast between schooling in Nigeria and in Europe, describing the transition as both eye-opening and challenging.

According to her, Nigerian education focuses heavily on memorization and repetition, while her studies in Europe demand critical thinking, research, and real-life application of classroom knowledge.

She wrote:

“Schooling in Nigeria made me learn exactly what I was taught and spitting it out in tests/exams.
Schooling in Europe says I need to learn what I’m taught, read more outside of school work and apply that knowledge to real life situations in texts/exams.
It’s a bit of a struggle tbh especially since I’ve never learnt how to do the latter.”

The reality star, who is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Global Security and Strategy at the Brussels School of Governance in Belgium, revealed that the opportunity came after five years of waiting, self-doubt, and perseverance. She also noted that she had almost settled for a course she wasn’t passionate about before finally getting her dream admission.

💭 Opinion: Saskay’s Experience Highlights a Bigger Educational Truth

Saskay’s honest reflection goes beyond personal struggle — it shines a light on a long-standing gap in the Nigerian educational system. Too often, students are taught to memorize for survival, not to understand for growth. The result? Brilliant minds who can recite facts but struggle to apply them in real-world problem-solving.

Her story is a reminder that education should ignite curiosity, not just demand compliance. The European model may be challenging, but it’s also empowering — it teaches students to think, question, and create solutions beyond the walls of a classroom.

Saskay’s courage to embrace this new learning style shows maturity and resilience. For many young Nigerians studying abroad, her story resonates deeply — a reminder that growth often starts with discomfort.

In the end, her journey isn’t just about education; it’s about unlearning old limits and embracing a new mindset — the kind that builds thinkers, not just graduates. 🎓💪
