Jamie Redknapp Identifies Major Weakness in Liverpool’s Squad After Chelsea Defeat
Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp has voiced his concern over the Reds’ current form, highlighting a major problem in their defensive setup following their 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The loss saw Moises Caicedo and Estevao Willian strike for the Blues, while Cody Gakpo’s lone goal proved insufficient for Arne Slot’s men, who slipped to second place on the Premier League table, behind Arsenal.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp lamented the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who departed Liverpool in the summer to join Real Madrid, describing his exit as a lingering wound for the Merseyside club.
“They have got problems at full-back. They are missing Trent [Alexander-Arnold],” Redknapp said.
“They have not played the same right-back since the Burnley game. Bradley had a tough 45 minutes.”
Liverpool have now failed to win any of their last three games against top-six opposition — a worrying sign for Slot, whose tenure has started with mixed fortunes.
Opinion: Trent’s Departure Exposed Liverpool’s Hidden Weakness
Jamie Redknapp’s remarks hit the nail on the head — Liverpool’s right flank has lost its rhythm since Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure. While Arne Slot’s philosophy emphasizes structure and control, the creative spark and precision Trent brought from deep areas simply can’t be replaced overnight.
The Reds’ full-back system was once their biggest strength — an attacking weapon that defined their modern era. Now, it seems to be their soft spot.
The constant rotation at right-back has not only disrupted the team’s balance but also reduced Liverpool’s attacking depth from wide areas. Slot’s challenge will be to find stability — either by reinventing his system or by trusting a consistent replacement.
Liverpool are still a team full of energy and purpose, but as Redknapp hinted, without Trent’s influence, they’re learning that great systems need great individuals to thrive.
