Troost-Ekong Sounds Warning Ahead of Clash with Gabon: “We Won’t Underestimate Aubameyang”

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has described Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as Gabon’s most dangerous player, ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff semi-final against the Panthers.

Aubameyang, who also captains Gabon, has been in electric form — netting seven goals in the qualifiers so far. The veteran striker is expected to lead Gabon’s attack when they face the Super Eagles on Thursday at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex in Rabat, with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m. Nigerian time.

Speaking to Olympics.com, Troost-Ekong acknowledged the threat posed by the former Arsenal star:

“Gabon is a strong team. Aubameyang continues to lead from the front, causing problems for defenders. I’ve played against him in Saudi Arabia, and I know what he brings. In Africa, you can’t underestimate any team, and we certainly won’t do that with Gabon.”

Opinion: Respecting the Opponent is the First Step to Victory

Troost-Ekong’s comments show maturity and leadership — qualities the Super Eagles will need if they’re to return to the World Cup stage. Too often in African football, “smaller teams” are dismissed until they spring an upset. Gabon, however, is not a team to take lightly, especially with a lethal finisher like Aubameyang, who has proven time and again that age is just a number when it comes to class and precision.

This fixture is more than just a qualification tie — it’s a test of discipline, teamwork, and tactical awareness. Nigeria’s defense must stay sharp and organized, because a moment’s hesitation against Aubameyang could be costly.

Still, there’s reason for optimism. The Super Eagles have enough experience, skill, and hunger to rise to the occasion — as long as they remember the lesson Troost-Ekong is preaching: every opponent deserves respect, but none should be feared.

Come Thursday, Nigeria must prove not only that they’re the better team on paper — but also the smarter one on the pitch.
