Simi Expresses Love for Nigeria, Says Citizens Wouldn’t Leave If the Country Worked

Simi Expresses Love for Nigeria, Says Citizens Wouldn’t Leave If the Country Worked

Afrobeats sensation Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has shared heartfelt thoughts about her love for Nigeria and the unshakable spirit of its people.

In a recent episode of the 90s Baby Show, the Joromi crooner spoke passionately about what makes Nigeria special to her, describing Nigerians as uniquely resilient and vibrant — a quality she believes cannot be copied by anyone else in the world.

“My favourite thing about Nigeria is just the spirit of Nigerians. You can’t replicate it,” Simi said.
“Nobody else can be a Nigerian other than a Nigerian. Even when they are faking African accents in Hollywood movies, they never actually fake a Nigerian accent. They always fake East African and South African accents. Being a Nigerian doesn’t just come as naturally — it just feels like home.”

However, Simi expressed sadness that the country’s system has failed its people, forcing many to leave in search of better lives abroad.

“That is why I wish the country was better. Because I feel like no one would want to leave,” she added.

Opinion — The Pain of Loving Nigeria From Afar

Simi’s words capture a sentiment that resonates deeply with millions of Nigerians — that bittersweet mix of pride and heartbreak. There’s something truly magnetic about Nigeria’s people: the humour, creativity, survival instinct, and warmth that shine even in the face of chaos. Yet, it’s precisely this spirit that makes the nation’s struggles more painful to watch.

It’s one thing to criticize your country; it’s another to love it so much that you wish it could love you back. Simi’s reflections are not just about patriotism — they’re a quiet cry for reform.

Nigeria’s greatest export has always been its people — from tech innovators and athletes to musicians who redefine global soundscapes. Imagine what this same energy could achieve if it didn’t have to fight so hard just to survive.

In Simi’s words lies a simple truth: Nigerians don’t truly want to leave; they just want a home that works. Until that dream becomes real, love for Nigeria will remain both a blessing and a burden — the kind that makes you proud to belong but pained to stay.
