Amorim Frustrated as Manchester United Let Lead Slip in 2–2 Draw with Tottenham
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has expressed disappointment over his team’s failure to maintain their intensity in the 2–2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
The Red Devils looked on course for all three points after Bryan Mbeumo gave them a first-half lead, but the game turned on its head in the closing stages. Spurs struck back through Mathys Tel and Richarlison, before Matthijs De Ligt salvaged a draw for United with a late header.
Speaking after the match, Amorim lamented his players’ drop in pressing intensity and lack of killer instinct.
“During the game we felt like the three points were there to take home,” Amorim told reporters.
“But with everything that happened — Harry Maguire and Casemiro coming off, conceding two goals — we scored again and it’s a point.
When you cannot win, you don’t lose. But today was our day to win this game.”
The Portuguese coach emphasized that while the team showed flashes of dominance, their complacency cost them dearly.
“We were not pressing with the same intensity. We felt comfortable, but if we had more bravery, we would have killed the game. Sometimes this happens — you have a better first half than second.”
💭 Opinion: United Still Lacking the Ruthlessness of Champions
Amorim’s words hit the heart of Manchester United’s recurring problem — consistency. The Red Devils played the first half with purpose and structure, but once again, they faded when it mattered most.
Football at the top level isn’t just about playing well in phases; it’s about sustaining pressure and punishing your opponent when they wobble. Tottenham looked beaten before halftime, yet United allowed them back in — a familiar story for fans who have watched this team drop points from winning positions time and time again.
It’s also telling that Amorim referenced “bravery.” Too often, United play it safe when confidence is needed most. The substitutions of Maguire and Casemiro disrupted rhythm, yes, but great teams adapt and respond — not retreat.
If Amorim truly wants to transform Manchester United into a title-challenging side, he’ll need to instill that killer mentality — the kind of edge that doesn’t settle for a draw when victory was within reach.
Because in the Premier League, comfort is the enemy of champions. 🏆🔥
