Bigiano Claims He Wrote the Hook for Davido’s Hit “Dami Duro”
Nigerian singer Bigiano has stirred conversation in the music industry by claiming that he was the original writer of the hit song Dami Duro, famously performed by Davido.
In a recent interview with content creator Akin Abolade, the Shayo crooner revealed, “I wrote Dami Duro for Davido. I wrote the hook.” The song, released in 2011, catapulted Davido to stardom and has since been celebrated as one of the greatest Afrobeats songs of all time by both local and international fans.
Bigiano also opened up about his absence from the music scene in recent years, saying, “Sometimes, you have to take a break to be able to come back again. I went on a sabbatical to make my return to music massive.” He reassured fans that despite his hiatus, he is financially stable, stressing, “I can’t be broke.”
It is worth noting, however, that Bigiano is not officially credited as a co-writer of Dami Duro, which raises questions about recognition and authorship in the Nigerian music industry.
Opinion: Recognition and the Cost of Fame
Bigiano’s revelation highlights a recurring issue in the music industry: the complex dynamics of credit and recognition. While performers often become the face of a hit, behind-the-scenes contributors sometimes remain unacknowledged, creating tension and controversy.
This situation also offers a broader lesson about intellectual property in Afrobeats. As Nigerian music continues to gain global recognition, ensuring proper credit for all creators is not just fair—it safeguards the industry’s integrity and encourages innovation.
For fans, Bigiano’s claim adds a new layer to the story of Dami Duro, prompting reflection on the contributions of songwriters who help craft the hits that define generations. Whether or not official recognition follows, his role reminds us that every iconic song is often the product of collaboration, effort, and unseen talent.
