Ahmed Musa Bows Out of Super Eagles Duty After Illustrious 15-Year Career

Ahmed Musa Bows Out of Super Eagles Duty After Illustrious 15-Year Career

Former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable career in Nigeria’s national colours. TalkTalk Nigeria reports that the announcement was made on Wednesday via the winger’s social media page.

Musa, who currently serves as the General Manager of Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Kano Pillars, reflected emotionally on his journey with the national team.

“I wore this badge with pride for 15 years. From a 17-year-old boy answering every call to becoming the most capped Super Eagle with 111 appearances. AFCON champion. Nigeria’s highest World Cup goalscorer. Captain. Servant. Believer. I gave everything. Thank you Nigeria… my heart will always beat green,” he wrote on X.

The 33-year-old made his Super Eagles debut in an AFCON qualifying match against Madagascar on September 5, 2010. Over the years, he became a mainstay of the team, featuring in multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and FIFA World Cups.

Musa was a key member of the squad that lifted the AFCON trophy in South Africa in 2013 and holds the unique record of being the only Nigerian to score more than once in a single World Cup match—an achievement that cemented his place in the nation’s football history.

Opinion: A Farewell Befitting a True Servant of the Game

Ahmed Musa’s retirement marks the end of an era for the Super Eagles. Beyond the goals and records, his career was defined by consistency, humility, and an unwavering commitment to the national team—qualities that endeared him to fans and teammates alike.

In an age where international duty is sometimes treated as optional, Musa’s willingness to “answer every call” stands out. He carried the flag across continents, through highs and lows, and remained a symbol of leadership even when his club career faced challenges.

As Nigeria looks to a new generation of stars, Musa’s legacy offers a blueprint: represent the badge with pride, give everything, and never forget who you are playing for. His boots may be hung up internationally, but his impact on Nigerian football will continue to echo for years to come.
