Rio Ferdinand Casts Doubt on Saka’s Title Claim as Man City Lurk in Arsenal’s Shadow
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has questioned Arsenal star Bukayo Saka’s assertion that the Gunners are “in control” of the Premier League title race, warning that Manchester City remain a major threat despite trailing on the table.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former England defender described Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City as a “beast” that cannot be ignored at this stage of the season. Ferdinand stressed that Arsenal’s slim advantage offers no guarantees, especially with City’s proven ability to dominate the business end of the campaign.
After 17 matches, Arsenal sit two points ahead of City, a lead Ferdinand believes is far from decisive.
“Saka can’t really be saying, ‘Arsenal are in control,’” Ferdinand said.
“Not when you have that beast, Man City, hanging about. Only minutes before, City were above you.
“I hope Saka is right and Arsenal are thinking like that.”
While Ferdinand acknowledged the confidence within Mikel Arteta’s camp, he made it clear that experience counts for a lot in title races — and City have plenty of it.
Opinion: Confidence Is Good, Caution Is Better
Saka’s words reflect the belief growing within Arsenal’s young and hungry squad, and that confidence has undoubtedly fueled their recent resurgence. However, Ferdinand’s warning feels timely and realistic. Manchester City have made a habit of turning narrow deficits into dominant finishes, often when rivals least expect it.
Arsenal may look sharper, more disciplined, and more mature than in previous seasons, but “being in control” in December is very different from lifting the trophy in May. City’s depth, experience, and relentless winning mentality mean they are never truly behind until the final whistle of the season.
Still, bold declarations often signal a shift in mindset — and perhaps that’s what Arsenal need to finally shake off years of near-misses. Whether Saka’s confidence proves prophetic or premature, one thing is certain: with City lurking, the title race is far from settled — and that makes this Premier League season even more thrilling for fans.
