AFCON 2025: Chelle Admits Super Eagles Must Improve Ahead of Tunisia Clash

AFCON 2025: Chelle Admits Super Eagles Must Improve Ahead of Tunisia Clash

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has pointed out key areas for improvement as Nigeria prepares for a crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Group C encounter against Tunisia this weekend.

Chelle’s comments came in the aftermath of Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Tanzania in their opening group match on Tuesday in Morocco. Goals from Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman were enough to secure all three points for the Super Eagles against Miguel Ángel Gamond’s side.

Despite the win, the Nigerian coach was quick to acknowledge that the performance was far from perfect, particularly in the second half.

“The second half of the game against Tanzania shows clearly that there is still some work to be done,” Chelle said during his post-match interview. “Especially when it comes to killing the game. We are aware of this, and we’ll work on it.”

The result places Nigeria second in Group C, behind Tunisia, who currently top the group following their convincing 3–1 victory over Uganda.

Opinion: A Win, But a Timely Wake-Up Call

While the opening win provides a solid foundation for Nigeria’s AFCON campaign, Chelle’s honesty may be the most encouraging sign for fans. The Super Eagles showed quality going forward and moments of control, but their inability to fully shut down the game left room for unnecessary tension.

Against a disciplined and experienced Tunisian side, such lapses could prove costly. Tunisia are known for punishing indecision, and Nigeria will need to be sharper, more ruthless, and more composed when chances arise.

However, the positives remain clear. Lookman’s energy, Ajayi’s composure, and the team’s overall structure suggest there is more to come from this squad. If the Super Eagles can learn quickly and apply those lessons against Tunisia, they won’t just be chasing qualification—they’ll be sending a message to the rest of the tournament.

The Tunisia clash now feels like an early test of ambition, character, and tactical growth. And for Nigeria, it’s an opportunity to turn promise into authority.
