AFCON 2025: Ndidi Explains Osimhen’s Frustration After Tanzania Win

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has played down concerns surrounding Victor Osimhen’s reaction following his substitution during Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Tanzania at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday.

Nigeria secured all three points against Miguel Ángel Gamond’s side through goals from Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman, but a late moment involving Osimhen caught attention after the final whistle.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle introduced Paul Onuachu in place of Osimhen late in the game, a decision that appeared to frustrate the Galatasaray striker. Osimhen was visibly displeased as he left the pitch, exchanging words with Chelle before taking his seat on the bench.

Addressing the situation during the post-match press conference, Ndidi dismissed suggestions of any internal disagreement, instead pointing to Osimhen’s intense desire to succeed with the national team.

“I didn’t see that but it is what it is,” Ndidi said. “Osimhen is a big player, he wants to do the best for the team, maybe a bit frustrated.

“It is normal, we are human beings. Maybe he feels the game did not go his way because he was trying for the team. That is the kind of player he is—we needed him.

“So I think Osimhen is kind of putting too much pressure on himself. I’m going to speak to him. He wants to win.”

Opinion: Passion, Not a Problem

Osimhen’s reaction, rather than being a cause for alarm, may actually reflect the hunger that makes him one of Africa’s most feared strikers. Players of his calibre thrive on responsibility, and moments of frustration often stem from high expectations—both personal and collective.

Ndidi’s calm leadership and willingness to speak with his teammate highlight a healthy dressing room environment, where emotions are understood rather than exaggerated. In tournament football, such passion can be a double-edged sword, but when properly managed, it often fuels greatness.

With experienced voices guiding the squad and a strong opening win already secured, Nigeria appears well-placed to channel Osimhen’s drive into decisive performances ahead. If anything, this episode suggests a team that cares deeply—and that could make all the difference as AFCON 2025 unfolds.
