Nkechi Blessing Laments ₦80m Movie Losses, Considers Stepping Back from Film Production
Popular Nollywood actress and producer, Nkechi Blessing Sunday, has openly expressed her frustration over the financial realities of movie production, revealing that she has spent over ₦80 million on films in recent months without seeing any meaningful returns.
Taking to social media, the outspoken actress disclosed that she has been self-funding movie projects since September, yet has not earned even ₦1 million from the investments. The situation, she admitted, has left her discouraged and considering stepping away from movie production altogether.
According to Nkechi, the challenge is not the quality of her work but the industry’s heavy reliance on hype and aggressive promotion. She noted that many viewers tend to ignore films that are not loudly marketed online, regardless of their substance.
“I no do again abeg… I have spent over 80 million naira producing movies since September and I haven’t gotten 1m back,” she wrote.
“As una no gree watch film if the movie is not over-hyped, I don try.”
The actress added that she may return to travelling and exploring other ventures if the situation does not improve.
Her emotional post sparked reactions across social media, with fans and colleagues offering words of encouragement. Actress Tonto Dikeh rallied behind her, urging her not to give up and promising strong support to promote her movies more aggressively.
“Give up? Who is permitting that sin? Not on my watch,” Tonto wrote. “We will share it everywhere. We don’t accept defeat here.”
Opinion: Nkechi Blessing’s outburst sheds light on a growing but often unspoken issue in Nollywood—the harsh economics behind film production. While the industry continues to grow in visibility, many independent producers still struggle to break even, especially without strong marketing structures or streaming deals.
Her experience also raises important questions about audience behavior. Has hype become more important than storytelling? Are quality films being overlooked simply because they are not trending on social media?
At the same time, Nkechi’s honesty resonates with many creatives who silently bear losses while trying to keep the industry alive. While stepping back may offer her personal relief, her story could also spark necessary conversations about better distribution, fair monetization, and stronger support systems for filmmakers.
For now, fans hope this is not the end of Nkechi Blessing’s journey as a producer—but rather a pause that leads to smarter strategies and better returns.
