Arsenal’s Declan Rice to Miss Aston Villa Clash Due to Knee Injury
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that midfielder Declan Rice will not be part of the matchday squad for Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash against Aston Villa. Rice, who started at right-back in Arsenal’s 2–1 victory over Brighton, sustained a knee injury during the game and has yet to recover.
“Declan got a big kick in his knee at the start of the [Brighton] match. The game was too early for him to be able to consider,” Arteta explained. “Short-term? We think so. We’re hopeful when the swelling comes down and he can start to function, he will be fine.”
In Rice’s absence, Arteta has opted for a midfield trio of Martin Ødegaard, Martín Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino. Jurrien Timber will return to take his place at right-back.
Opinion: While Rice’s injury is a setback for Arsenal, Arteta’s midfield reshuffle demonstrates the depth and tactical flexibility in the squad. Ødegaard, Zubimendi, and Merino offer a blend of creativity, control, and defensive stability, which could prove decisive against Villa. For fans, it’s an opportunity to see how Arsenal adapts without one of their key players, and whether the team can maintain its momentum at the top of the Premier League.
