Arteta Explains Decision to Bench Declan Rice in Arsenal’s 3-0 Win Over Forest
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has shed light on his decision to start without Declan Rice in the Gunners’ comfortable 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the Emirates on Saturday.
Instead, Arteta opted for a midfield trio of Martin Ødegaard, Mikel Merino, and Martín Zubimendi, with Zubimendi grabbing a brace and Viktor Gyökeres also on target.
When asked why Rice was left on the bench, Arteta explained that he wanted to reward Merino’s form:
“Mikel [Merino] comes back after scoring four goals in two games with a really high emotional state and I want to use that when a player is in that moment.
I want to play him because he is going to bring something different with the qualities that they have, and Declan comes in and it will have an impact immediately or he will play the next game. That is what we need to try to manage the best possible way.”
Arsenal will next face Athletic Club in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.
Opinion: Arteta Shows the Depth of His Arsenal Project
Arteta’s explanation reflects something Arsenal fans have been craving for years: squad depth that allows rotation without fear. A few seasons ago, benching a £105m signing like Declan Rice would have seemed unthinkable. Now, it feels like a luxury problem.
By rewarding Merino’s form, Arteta is sending a message that no player—no matter the price tag—is undroppable. It’s a smart man-management move that not only keeps competition healthy but also ensures his midfield stays fresh across multiple competitions.
What’s more, Rice’s presence on the bench gave Arsenal an insurance policy; the team could still call on his steel and composure if needed. This ability to rotate between dynamic, in-form players and world-class stalwarts is what separates title challengers from champions.
If Arsenal can keep this balance right, they might finally have the depth to sustain a Premier League title run and a strong Champions League campaign simultaneously.
